Is it possible to connect to the internet when in "Safe Mode?"?

I have a problem computer that runs Windows XP Pro. Has become corrupted and can only boot into Windows in safe mode. My OS disks got inadvertently thrown out during recent move so cannot re-load windows XP.( I am reluctant to plop down 75 bucks for a new set of XP software.) Was hoping to get to PC Pit-stop to get analysis and possible fix. Any suggestions?
